mother, listen to my heart; just as one beat ends, another starts. you can hear no matter where you are --

sweat clung to his skin as though it belonged there, as though it were normal for his internal temperature to run this high. skull feeling as though it had been clawed hollow, seung jin sought to remove his pounding heart as well, to seek out the instruction of his older brother and end it all. there was more than anyone had alluded to concerning the school's story, and he was bright enough to infer just what it might be, but in his current state, jin was lucky to make out little more than where his feet had pulled him. the room was hardly extraordinary in the make and model of most lecture halls, but it held little touches that implied its habitual user taught mathematics and was particularly neat in his calculations.

perched atop one of the elongated surfaces, seung jin ran a hand over his clammy skin and searched the blinded windows. he'll show up eventually, but will they appear before he does? last night had been hell, to say the least. his mind had been coated with the retributions cast upon all who had traversed these grounds, past and present. jin had been certain his eyes would bleed and the tremors that shook his body would escalate into fatal convulsions. instead, the entire ordeal took no more effect on him than a high dose of his medication, numbing him until he could do nothing but stare dumbly, praying that exhaustion would provide an eventual escape.

now, seeking clarity, he waited for the only familiar entity on campus. seung jin knew he was playing devil's advocate, but did he truly belong in any other position?

He was living out of his own mind. Every once in a while, a much too real memory would peek its head from beneath the surface, searing itself into his brain and causing a brief seizure. Teaching was way out of the question at this point, not when he couldn't differentiate his own name with the next, sanity kept together by a thin thread.

And yet in this most inopportune of moments, only one name would come to him. He knew it better than his own, more real than anything else that he'd ever known. He needed him now-- but what were the chances that his little brother would comply?

Spending the majority of his time inside his room the night prior to, those four walls kept him safe. Sweat covered his skin, trails of red littered his limbs. His eyes never fixated on anything for longer than a brief second, afraid that he'd trigger another attack should he offend a single particle of air. Whatever mask he'd so carefully crafted for the past couple of decades crumbled into dust and he was left to face the truth. Pitiful became he, the man who'd been known for exuberance and pride.

He was recovering from yet another episode during his short visit to the washroom: clawing at the skin that no longer fit him in futile hopes to leave it. They were hidden underneath his sleeves now, but the feeling remained. Miraculously making his way back to his office, there he was. Standing there like a mirage in the midst of a desert, one whom he'd yearned to see for what felt like a life time now. "Seung-chi, is that you?" Or perhaps it was another trick to the eye, there was nothing to be sure of now.

a fire, lit by the angry coals of his adolescence, flared within him at the sound of his once nickname. there was no doubt that seung hyun tried to keep it current, but he'd long since abandoned the hope of his shattered childhood returning so that he might relive it in normalcy. instead, jin looked to his brother through shaded eyes and prayed that the other's tone implied an almost sedated state of mind. he wasn't fool enough to allow the hopeful note attached to his name slip in one ear and right out the other.

”what happened,” jin breathed uneasily, wishing that there was more strength to his voice. he was still uncertain in his own body, however, unsure of the magnitude of the lingering effects from last night. there was a simple, hollow feeling to his insides as though he'd been gutted and left to die. ”what happened last night that caused this,” he demanded further, head lulling a bit as he forced himself to sit straighter.
